Criteria B - Developing Ideas

Strand 1

The following images are an explanation of what each scene is going to be like. Scene by scene I've explained the background, the color, the speech, the music, the action taking place and the sprite used. This will help me with my sketches as I will know exactly what to put when I draw out each scene.

Strand 2

Strand 3

Strand 4

In my first sketch, I drew that will be my final design, I followed the backgrounds picked out in my design specification. In the first scene, I drew out a classroom, however I could only fit 2 desks as I didn’t have enough space. I used the colors you would find in a classroom as I wrote in my design specification and followed. I wrote a brief introduction on what the teacher is teaching which is littering and recycling, which I wrote on the board. In the second scene, I slightly strayed from what I wrote in my design specification and decided to show a lake and some land to show how litter can pollute and ruin waterways which means we won’t have access to clean water. It shows the students complaining about how disgusting it is and the teacher reprimanding them about how this is why we shouldn’t litter. I used ugly colors like I said I would so that it would look deterring and unappealing. They’re also quite monotone like I said they would as I used colors like black that are quite plain. In my third scene. I followed my design specifications and drew out a few recycling bins and garbage bins so that the teacher could explain what each one is for. I drew out paper, glass, plastic and metal. I didn’t completely follow the colors I wrote in my design specification though. In my fourth scene, it is set in a gorgeous neighborhood with beautiful scenery and the children are in awe of how pretty it looks to which the teacher reminds them that this is a neighborhood that doesn’t litter. In the final scene, the background returns to the classroom to which the students reflect on what they’ve just seen and the teacher reminds them of the importance of using recycling and garbage bins.

Criteria A - Strand 4

My Design Brief

Littering is a huge problem in our society as it negatively affects our environment to a great extent. The moment of laziness where people decide to leave their trash on the tables affects animals as for example, if its plastic, they mistake it for food and end up eating it which kills them, which destroys our ecosystem. It damages our waterways too as when we litter it goes into our rivers which pollutes them. It's also extremely expensive to hire people to clean the environment and to get rid of all the litter. It attracts insects like cockroaches and animals like rats which carry diseases and can potentially damage our health, items such as broken glass is also a danger hazard as if somebody falls into it or touches it, they will get cut.

I have tried to combat this problem by creating a Scratch game that will raise awareness and teach people how to dispose of their trash correctly in a fun and interactive way. For example, a solution to littering that I will be talking about in my Scratch game is recycling. It is the process of collecting materials in order to reuse them into new products instead of just throwing them as trash. It also helps us use fewer resources from our environment. It reduces the amount of waste in landfills and prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect new materials. Another solution I will be discussing is how to properly use garbage bins and to make sure they don't fall onto the ground as that would make litter spread even further, I will also insert in my game the importance of places many garbage bins around the area as people will be more inclined to throw it away as there are so many designated areas. I will also include the importance of simply picking up litter when you see it as that could make a huge positive impact on the environment. My scratch project will be very informative but in an entertaining way. I'll use different backgrounds to showcase areas that are free of litter and other areas that are polluted with littering and will compare the areas.

Criteria A - Strand 3

The following are my SWOT analyses of existing solutions to defeat littering. I've analyzed a range of solutions, by explaining their strengths and how they help to stop littering, but also discussing their weaknesses and the possible opportunities to improve the solution so that it will work better and what can be quite hard to improve and the possible issues with trying to improve the solution.

SWOT Analysis 1

The first solution is to pick up litter when you see it, meaning that if you see scraps of litter lying around, even if it doesn't belong to you, pick it up and throw it in the trash anyway. However, this isn't a foolproof solution as some people may be in a hurry and can't just spend their time picking up and throwing away trash and a lot of people are lazy and can't be bothered to pick up and throw away litter, that's why the litter ends up there in the first place, its simply that the trash can is too far away for them and they don't want to get up and throw it away. My solution to this is to allocate a few people to pick up litter in each grade so that the school stays a tidy place. Although an issue with improving the solution is that nobody would want to have that kind of a job as nobody finds it incredibly fun to spend their time picking up litter.

SWOT Analysis 2

My second solution is to use the trash cans correctly, what I mean by this is to ensure that they can take in a lot of space and are tight so that the trash can does not spill it onto the ground because if it falls over onto the ground the pickup trucks won't notice the trash on the ground and will only throw away the trash can. We must ensure there are lids on the trash cans too so that they won't spill onto the ground. A weakness to this is that sometimes people are too lazy to even open the lid and end up throwing the litter on top of the lid which makes it end up falling over. Another weakness is the fact that sometimes people like to throw their litter from a distance into the trash can as if it was basketball and most often, they miss which causes more litter to pile onto the ground. An improvement to the solution is to place many garbage cans around the area so it is nearby to everyone so that they'll use it efficiently. An issue with improving the solution is that people are so lazy that they don't even bother to get up and leave their trash on the tables.

SWOT Analysis 3

The third solution is to raise awareness to the negative impact littering has on the community so that people will think twice before they litter and realize that a small thing like leaving your trash on the table can greatly affect the environment in a negative way. However, a weakness to this is the fact that people may be bored and not care while your raising awareness and won't be paying attention and so littering will not stop. An improvement to this solution is to make the raising awareness in presentations more interactive and fun so that people will pay attention and may actually listen and stop littering. An issue with this improvement is that even when people learn things. they don't actually use it in their everyday lives so people may simply ignore the presentation.

Criteria A - Strand 1

Introduction

Littering is a huge problem in today's day and age. As the population grows and more products are created, waste has risen. Leaving something as small as a piece of plastic on the floor, simply because the garbage bin was too far away can have a big impact on the world. It causes harm to animals, damages our waterways as litter often ends up in the water which pollutes it. It also causes harm to the wildlife once the litter lands in their water. It is a threat to public health as it attracts vermin and causes bacteria to multiply which can cause many diseases to the population. It's extremely costly to clean up all the litter whereas if everyone didn't litter and threw everything in the bin, it wouldn't cost nearly as much money to get rid of it all. Littering is also a potential fire hazard as when you throw cigarette buds, it could potentially cause a fire. It makes the community look filthy and unkept. Americans discard approximately 2.7 million tons of aluminum per year, from that about 50% is recycled.

Design Situation

Many people do not understand the impact a single piece of litter could have on the environment. Eventually, it all adds up which can cause a huge impact on the environment. This is why I decided I'm going to make a project on Scratch, teaching them the importance of recycling and throwing waste in the designated bin. Recycling even helps stop the damage done to rainforests as it lessens the need for raw materials as they can be recycled. Recycling also helps preserve natural resources as it needs less energy. It also costs more to make products by raw material instead of using recycled material.  Therefore I'm going to be making an interactive, visually appealing game about the importance of recycling and throwing litter away so that the environment is a better place. By teaching children this lesson, they'll know what to do from a young age and they'll be able to incorporate this lesson into their daily lives. I will cover the different ways to recycle and what each bin is designed for and show people the negative impact littering has on the environment and our everyday life. Recycling is very important to know, for example, recycling steel and tin cans save 74% of the energy used to produce them. However, these cans can be 100% recyclable which can help our environment further. This is why I am going to create a project on Scratch teaching people how important this is and to try and raise awareness to this cause.
